Medina Family Tree

The Medina family was a Puerto Rican family rooted in Puerto Rico and later the New York City area. After Miguel Francisco Medina Torres was killed in gang- and drug-related violence, his son Francisco “Cisco” Medina left the island and built a life stable enough for his mother, Claudia, and younger sister, Sofia, to join him. Expanded access to disability services changed Sofia’s daily life, while Cisco’s work with Ezra Cruz drew the family into the wider CRATB household.

Medina Family Tree

Three generations of the Puerto Rican Medina family, from Miguel and Claudia on the island, through Cisco (Ezra Cruz's head of security) and his sister Sofia (born with Down syndrome), to Cisco and Michelle's son Miguel Ángel. Their staged relocation from Puerto Rico to the New York City area expanded the family's options and Sofia's access to services.

Overview

Through Cisco’s long tenure as Ezra Cruz’s head of security, the Medina family became woven into the broader CRATB orbit. Sofia formed a close bond with Charlie Rivera, while Claudia remained the practical center of Sofia’s care. Cisco later married Michelle, and their son, Miguel Ángel, extended the family into a third generation.

The family retained Puerto Rican language, food, music, names, and family practices after migration. Cisco moved first, while Claudia and Sofia followed after he had established enough stability for reunification.

Founding and Ancestry

The documented Medina line began with the marriage of Miguel Francisco Medina Torres and Claudia Colón. Their children used the traditional Spanish surname order, with their father’s Medina surname followed by their mother’s Colón surname.

Generational Structure

First Generation

Miguel Francisco Medina Torres (born circa 1961, Puerto Rico; died circa 2005–2006, Puerto Rico) married Claudia Colón (born circa 1969, Puerto Rico). Miguel was approximately twenty-eight and Claudia approximately twenty when their first child was born. Miguel was killed in gang- and drug-related violence at approximately forty-four or forty-five years old, when Cisco was sixteen and Sofia was five or six.

Second Generation

Francisco Ángel Medina Colón (born circa 1989–1990, Puerto Rico). The firstborn, approximately ten years older than his sister. Cisco left Puerto Rico at twenty-one and built a life in New York stable enough for his mother and sister to join him. He served as Ezra Cruz’s head of security and was the longest-tenured member of Ezra’s professional orbit besides the band. He married Michelle and had a son, Miguel Ángel Medina, around 2030.

Sofia Alexandra Medina Colón (born December 22, 2000, Puerto Rico). Cisco’s younger sister, born with Down syndrome.

Third Generation

Miguel Ángel Medina (born circa 2030). Son of Cisco and Michelle. Named for his paternal grandfather Miguel Francisco Medina Torres, with a middle name that also echoed Cisco’s own. Upon meeting newborn Raffie Cruz in 2035, he informed Ezra Cruz directly: “El es mio, Tio Ezra. No tuyo.”

Extended Family Through Marriage

Michelle Anaise Medina (née Rodriguez, born circa 1996, Florida). Cisco’s wife and Miguel Ángel’s mother. Her relationship with Cisco began around 2016, and they married around 2022. A mainland Puerto Rican woman raised in Florida, Michelle was the eldest of four children and lived with her father, Héctor Rodriguez, after her parents separated. Her bond with Claudia became maternal, while her relationship with Sofia grew through learning Sofia’s communication and fatigue cues and maintaining familiar routines during visits. Michelle lived with PCOS and hypothyroidism, experienced pregnancy-related hypertension that resolved after delivery, and later developed mild hypertension again as she aged. Her endometriosis was treated with a hysterectomy following Miguel Ángel’s difficult birth, making him her only child. For her full biography, see Michelle Medina.

Sofia Alexandra Medina Colón (born December 22, 2000, Puerto Rico). Cisco’s sister, born with Down syndrome and substantial support needs. She grew up without adequate, consistent access to the disability and educational services she needed. After moving with Claudia to the New York City area, she gained speech therapy, occupational therapy, special education, and communication support. She was known for her sassiness, her opinions, and her particular claim on Charlie Rivera.

Values and Dynamics

The Medina family often expressed love through practical action. Claudia organized daily care, medication, appointments, food, and household continuity after Miguel’s death. Cisco worked, saved, sent money home, helped Claudia and Sofia relocate, and remained closely involved in Sofia’s support. Michelle learned Sofia’s communication and fatigue cues and preserved her familiar routines during family visits.

Miguel’s death, years of financial strain, staged migration, and Sofia’s inadequate access to childhood services remained part of the family’s shared history. The family spoke about some experiences more readily than others, but their relationships were visible in repeated acts of presence, preparation, and follow-through.

Interpersonal Patterns

Claudia, Cisco, and Michelle coordinated support through routines rather than a single designated household. Claudia and Sofia lived together elsewhere in the New York City area; Cisco, Michelle, and Miguel Ángel lived in the carriage house; and Sofia regularly stayed in its flex room as a guest. Medication, CPAP supplies, communication access, nap routines, and later Project Haven followed her between both homes.

Cisco and Ezra recognized one another’s habit of expressing care through work, food, money, and physical presence. Their professional relationship gradually connected the Medina family with Ezra, CRATB, and the wider Band House household without replacing the Medinas’ birth-family relationships.

Sofia’s childhood access to disability and educational services in Puerto Rico was inadequate for her needs. After relocation, she gained speech therapy, occupational therapy, special education, and communication support. The change expanded the tools and opportunities available to her without erasing the family language, routines, and relationships that had already shaped her life.

Health and Disability Across Generations

Sofia’s Down syndrome remained the most significant health and disability element in the Medina family. She received a severely limiting early prognosis that did not account for the development later supported by communication, educational, and therapeutic access.

By her mid-thirties, Sofia’s medical profile included hypothyroidism treated with daily levothyroxine, obstructive sleep apnea managed with CPAP, epilepsy, vision impairment requiring glasses, and hearing loss that worsened gradually with age. The interaction between these conditions organized the structure of her daily life, including an afternoon rest period that protected her energy and seizure threshold. Claudia managed the full constellation of medications, equipment, and appointments. Because adults with Down syndrome have an increased risk of Alzheimer-type dementia, Sofia’s care plan added annual assessment for change from her established cognitive, communication, behavioral, and daily-function baseline beginning at age forty. Screening did not presume that she would develop dementia and remained paired with evaluation for hearing loss, thyroid dysfunction, sleep apnea, depression, pain, seizures, infection, and medication effects that could also cause functional change.

Michelle Medina brought her own health history to the family. She lived with PCOS and hypothyroidism. Hypertension developed during her pregnancy with Miguel Ángel, resolved after delivery, and returned mildly as she aged. Her endometriosis was treated with a hysterectomy after the birth. The hypothyroidism she shared with Sofia was coincidental rather than genetic, but both women required daily levothyroxine and managed fatigue compounded by thyroid dysfunction.

Economic History and Class Trajectory

Miguel’s death left Claudia raising two children amid grief and financial strain. Cisco moved to New York at twenty-one, worked, saved, sent support home, and established enough stability for Claudia and Sofia to join him around 2012–2014.

Cisco’s long-term work in professional security later gave his household stable income and employer-provided benefits. He, Michelle, and Miguel Ángel lived rent-free in the Medina carriage house as part of the practical arrangement surrounding his work with Ezra Cruz. Cisco maintained a medical fund for Sofia, while Ezra funded additional family support, including both Project Haven installations.

Geographic Movement and Migration

The Medina family’s relocation from Puerto Rico to the New York City area happened in stages. Cisco left first at twenty-one, around 2010 or 2011. He worked and sent support home while preparing for Claudia and Sofia to join him.

Claudia and Sofia followed around 2012–2014, when Sofia was entering her early teens and needed services available in New York. The family settled in the New York City area and maintained Puerto Rican language, food, music, names, and family memory across both generations.

  • Circa 2012–2014: Claudia and Sofia join Cisco in the New York City area. Sofia gains expanded access to disability and educational services.
  • Circa 2027–2028: Cisco is hired by Marisol Cruz as Ezra Cruz’s head of security, beginning the family’s connection to the CRATB orbit.
  • Early 2035: Berlin overdose—a crisis that compounds Cisco’s personal history with substance-related loss.

Continuing Family Relationships

The Medina family’s life remained private and practical. Cisco spent decades at Ezra’s side, Claudia sustained Sofia’s daily care, Michelle became part of that support circle, and Sofia continued developing beyond the limiting prognosis she had received as a child in Puerto Rico.

Cisco’s family experience contributed to the practical disability knowledge he brought to security work: familiarity with communication differences, fatigue, medication and equipment routines, and the need to respond to the person rather than an assumption about capacity. His professional stability, in turn, supported the family relationships he had worked to reunite.
